Mildred Pierce and the Hutch
I am genetically incapable of driving by the curbside treat, no matter how rough and pitiful it may look through the window of my car (my Dad and sister are my picking spotters, so you can see, it runs in the family). This behemoth, in all of its glorious putty-ness, sang a siren song I couldn't refuse:
It wasn't until I got home that I realized that this was the one thing I actually needed for my work space: a place in which to store all of the tricks of my trade (OR all of my favorite knick-knacks..they're a nightmare to dust, but they make my house a home).
Did you have a chance to see the HBO adaptation of the Joan Crawford movie "Mildred Pierce"? I fell in love with every aspect of this wonderful period piece, the 1940s set design was worth hitting pause every time they moved from room to room. The kitchen in particular is the kitchen of my dreams:
The gold/yellow that I painted the file cabinets that make up my desk was directly inspired by Ms. Pierce's kitchen...to me, it was the perfect neutral. Two cans of Rust-Oleum "Summer Squash" later, and this is what I had:
Somehow, it didn't match my desk and it certainly wasn't Mildred's yellow...So it was time for Plan B. When in doubt, go with white (plus I figured that would match the TJ Maxx contact paper I used to cover the front of the cabinets..)
So, until I can find Mildred's exact yellow, this is going to have to do..in the meantime, the way this hutch has turned out only encourages me to continue to drive with my hazard lights on..
Come visit these fabulous folks and get inspired!
